When I first saw yesterday's Awful Link of the Day on SomethingAwful.com, I was going to post here in my LJ that they were out of line this time: from the excerpts they posted, it looked like it was a webcomic about fat acceptance, which isn't awful at all. But looking at the whole site, it's actually drawings by a man (and probably not an exceptionally large one, judging by how he drew the male character in the comic) fetishizing fat women. It's no better than some guy putting up a website about how he loves anorexic women. Weighing 500 pounds or more, like the main character in the comic, is as bad for one's health as being anorexic. The main character's friend was more like 300 which, contrary to what most people think, does not actually pose a health risk. But that's not heavy enough for this guy; just like men who only like emaciated women, it's not attractive unless it threatens the woman's physical well-being. There was one panel where the character says how she'll need to get an electric wheelchair because she's 600 pounds and gaining. This is what this guy likes - formerly healthy women becoming unable to move around by themselves. And the character's husband was encouraging her to gain enough weight that she'll no longer be ambulatory, because he found that attractive. I'm sure this guy thinks he's being liberal and progressive but he's not showing any more respect for women than guys who objectify women who have the stereotypical model's body. So I agree that it's an awful link. But I think Something Awful might be calling it awful for the wrong reasons.
