PCRs still aren't working too well, despite getting new reagents. I'm running them at a lower annealing temperature now, I'm hoping that helps.

I finally remembered to bring my crappy little tape player and my book-on-tape of Return of the Native. Read by Alan Rickman. Because otherwise I'd probably have no interest. It struck me, listening to it, that they don't go in much for characterization these days. Modern popular fiction seems to be all plot and the characters are mostly flimsy stereotypes. Obviously, Return of the Native is really, really heavy on description (like, chapter 1, in its entirety, describes the heath) but it works. I like all the imagery. I like that you can quickly get a sense of who the characters are, through skillful writing instead of sloppy pigeonhole-ing. Though, that I'm hearing it read in Alan's voice doesn't hurt. I think Kevin Smith once said he'd pay to hear Alan reading the phone book and he's got a good point. Anyway. From now on, I'm going to listen to books on tape during my commute. I did that back when I had to commute up to Sacramento to those programming classes. I listened to The Odyssey, read by Derek Jacobi. It's a good thing they get sexy British guys to do the reading. Maybe I can get The Aeneid read by Jeremy Irons or somebody. That would be cool.
