They have video games in the future, right? Here's the 23rd century version of Robot Unicorn Attack.

drawing of Kirk, Spock and McCoy playing Robot Unicorn Attack in the holodeck

Yeah, I know holodecks weren't invented until the 2300s :P

Drawn by someone other than me, unfortunately: Sylar (and Mohinder, sort of).

I'm on fire! This one makes zero sense unless you read The Benefits of Fresh Air on [livejournal.com profile] spock_uhura up to part 10.

Rating: PG
Summary: Spock, having ingested an unidentified, alien mushroom (he does! read the fic!), runs around in a Vulcan loin cloth.
Warning: loin cloth.
onward to the cracky fancomic! )

Here's a thing I drew just now:

Pencil drawings always look better IRL than the scanned version. Ah well. Anyway, I had to draw Little Spock. He's so cute! With his little ears!
gmonkey42: the Sparklypoo House crest (Sparklypoo_new)
Someone at the Twilight premier had a Sparklypoo t-shirt. That is, a shirt with my crest (the old one, not the new, improved one as seen in my icon) and her text. I wish people wouldn't go around stealing original artwork and putting it on shirts. I would never do that.

It annoys me a little that people act like Sparklypoo is just this thing, sort of just sprang into existence by itself. No! I invented it! Not that I invented making fun of Mary Sues, but that unicorn crest drawing is mine, and the name "Sparklypoo" is mine. It's not that I want to be a bnf or anything. I don't know what I want. People not taking my drawing and putting it on a t-shirt would be nice. It would be different if it were just the words, or if she'd drawn her own Sparklypoo crest. I certainly don't mind that people use the word Sparklypoo all over the place, I think it's awesome that the idea spread like that. But nobody seems to know the source of it! I don't know, maybe I care more about that than other people. It's like with calling book 7 "Potterdammerung," that was really clever and I wanted to know who came up with it. I don't know why, it's not like I knew them, I just wanted to know.

People do fangirl me at the cons and that's cool - it's not even really that I want attention - but I don't like it when people go around with Sparklypoo stuff and they've never heard of gmonkey42 or of Pirate Monkeys Inc. like they just found this thing on the internet, it was just there. I'm sure there are copies of my comic floating around on other people's sites, with other people taking credit for them; I just don't let that get to me because there's nothing I can do about it. And I realize I don't have such a distinctive style, and I'm not all that prolific, so my work isn't instantly recognizable like at lot of people's. But still.

The real, underlying problem is that with people acting like Sparklypoo just happened, I feel like if I try to take credit for coming up with the name and drawing the comic, people will think I'm lying. If lots of people try to take credit for my ideas, then nobody can tell the difference when I try to take credit for them.

I don't even think the comic is drawn that well. I'm OK at drawing but I know I'm not great. It stings a little that there are more people who view the first page and leave than people who read the whole thing, but I don't have any illusions about how good I am. But it's damn funny, a lot of people liked it, and I want credit for that!

My Good Omens pinch-hitting [livejournal.com profile] swashbucklathon pic is done! Here's the entry.
gmonkey42: cartoon Sephiroth (Default)
Yeah, not going to get the inking done today. I've made a good start on the sketching, though. I still have to do the clothes, the hands and the background but it's coming along. And I have to finish the hair. That's always hard for me. I'll make it simple. It never works if I try to do otherwise.

IDEA!

OK, remember how I had the awesome idea last year to do a figure drawing workshop at Lumos but then people pointed out that we probably wouldn't get away with hiring a stripper to model and then I didn't get my act together to write another proposal in time?

Well, it's just occurred to me that proposals for Prophecy are due at the end of this month SO: would anyone who's going like to volunteer to ba a model (with clothes on)? I'll bring a cape because I was thinking we could have three topics: portraiture, figure drawing and drawing clothes. So two models would be ideal, then we could have one in somewhat tighter-fitting clothes for the people who'd rather focus on drawing the body and another in a more HP-esque outfit. I could be one of the two but getting two people besides me would be great.

I'm hoping to get a costume together, which is a separate thing. But if I get it done then I'd wear that and if anyone else is planning on going in costume, that'd be cool.

I'm also going to bring some books. I have one book on figure drawing that has lots of photos of naked people. I suppose I'd have to card people. What do you all think about that? It's a great reference, I use it myself a lot, so I'd like to bring it. But I don't want to get in trouble, nor do I want to ban people under 18 from attending the workshop. On the other hand, are there likely to be many people under 18? Maybe I could just say you have to be over 18.

Swashbucklathon
I've started inking the pencily bits that I've finished. I just need to sketch then ink one pair of pants and a hand (in sort of a tricky position, I'm going to have to take a photo of myself for reference) and then I'll be ready to scan and color. Oh, except I have to draw the ship's wheel. That's going to be a little hard. I always have trouble with architectural elements like that. Unlike with people, I can picture them fine but it's hard to draw them.

The next one will take a lot less time, I think. The third will take a while so I'm glad we've got the deadline extension. I probably would have ended up asking for one anyway on that piece, because it would really help to see PotC 2 for references and that doesn't come out till December 5.

The other thing
I don't like calling them "memes." A meme is an idea, concept, etc. that proliferates like a gene, not just a quiz that people post on their journals because they see them in other people's journals. I think the word is overused. I don't know what else to call the journal-posty things, though. Anyway, here it is:

This meme something is brought to you by Everygoddamnedbody (as seen on [livejournal.com profile] halogirl8).

1. Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fanart/etc. in general. Any fandom of mine.
2. Just one question, please, but it can have sub-parts.
3. That's it. It can be as normal or odd as you like.

My fandoms for today are: Harry Potter (obviously), Queer as Folk, Firefly/Serenity, X-Files, Wheel of Time and Sandman. No, I don't use the Oxford comma. I don't like it. I think it's redundant. OK, ask away.

It looks like I'm going to have to venture outside. I dragged myself outside just yesterday to return a video and get Chinese food. And now it's raining :(

The problem is I've been out of butter for about three days and I just ate my last egg. I was working on my [livejournal.com profile] swashbucklathon pic (still working on the first one but I'm thinking this one will take longer than the other two) and now my 4H pencil is dull and I can't find another one and I long since lost my pencil sharpenerand I don't wanna go out because it's all raaaaiiiiiiiny!

I might even do one in charcoal. Digging through my old pencils, looking for another suitably hard one for the preliminary sketching, I found all my charcoal. I quite like charcoal, I just don't use it much any more because it's messy and I have to spray the finished piece with fixative or it'll get all smudgy. Michael's is near the supermarket :D But it's rainy and I'll have to change out of my pajamas. Argh. OK, I'm going.
gmonkey42: cartoon Sephiroth (Default)
It makes my hand all tired. I'm used to holding a pencil at an angle - and varying the angle to get different line thicknesses - and I have to hold the stylus upright and vary the pressure instead. And to get a good, solid line, I have to press pretty hard.

So the silly Lil' Endless cartoony thing might take a while. Dream's hair takes FOREVER. I'm scared to start on Death's hair because hers is pretty much the same.

Drop whatever you're doing and go buy a copy of Thursday's USA Today RIGHT NOW. Then turn to page D2. And be amazed.

A reporter e-mailed me on Tuesday - but I didn't check my e-mail till Wednesday - to say he was writing an article about how people are making jokes about Brokeback Mountain and how that's raising the profile of the movie and making it accessible to a wider audience. And he wanted to know if he could include my Buckbeak Mountain poster. I said he could if he credited piratemonkeysinc.com. And he did! And it rules!

I had to rush home and make a higher resolution version of it. I was worried a little because I didn't have time to completely re-do it with high res screencaps (I did manage to find a better version of the poster). But it looks good!

WOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I haven't drawn anything in, like, forever. I was just looking at punkrockbigmouth's DeviantArt, which is awesome, and I thought "dammit, I have to draw more!"

I have the day off on Monday. Perhaps I will not spend it playing Puzzle Pirates.
gmonkey42: cartoon Sephiroth (Default)
I believe some of you expressed interest in Snape/Lupin: The Movie:

gmonkey42: cartoon Sephiroth (Sparklypoo)
It was fun while it lasted. I sympathize. And [livejournal.com profile] potterpuffs got a hell of a lot more artwork done per time than I do. I was thinking about it in the car driving home last night, how I'm getting into these other interests - belly dance, knitting, Puzzle Pirates - and I'm not spending the free time I have doing comics any more. And I felt bad because I know I have fans and I know what it's like to go to a web site where you like the stuff and you keep hoping they'll post something new (cough*grindylowe). I'm even thinking I'll have to drop out of [livejournal.com profile] hp_art_project. I feel horrible about that but given the nature of the project, I can't do it if I can't do something great for it and I don't think I can right now.

It's not that I'm tired of the fandom. I'm not. The comics are just so time-consuming. I remember when I did my first major comic (pre-X-Files Kids): a Jane Eyre parody for AP English class. I spent my entire spring break making it and it wasn't even scanned, let alone Photoshop coloring. It took me roughly a year to make the Sparklypoo comic. And at this point, even if I had a couple of weeks off, I wouldn't spend them drawing. I've found things I enjoy doing more.

The next thing I want to do is learn how to make Flash animation. I'm hoping to take vacation time in spring so I might be able to do it then. I have an awesome idea for the Pirate Monkey section of the site that involves Flash. I've always felt a little weird getting hits from Harry Potter stuff and would like to shift the focus to my own original stuff.

Anyway.

I'm not going on hiatus or anything. I'll continue to update at my usual barnacle's snail's pace. It's just that [livejournal.com profile] potterpuffs' announcement made me think about these things.

well, shit

I was looking at the newly-discovered (to me) and awesome [livejournal.com profile] potterpuffs and I found this:
Snape's Worst Memory.

There is no way in a million years (with a million GMonkeys and a million copies of Photoshop) that I'll top that for [livejournal.com profile] hp_art_project.

Haha.

Nah, mine will be more serious. But that [livejournal.com profile] potterpuffs is wicked awesome.
