So here's this idea on
ontd_startrek: we all knit beanies and send ZQ a big ol' box of beanies for his birthday.
I can knit beanies!
However:
Do I want to participate in this? I'm concerned that it might be about a 50/50 chance whether his reaction is "aww, my fans are hilarious," or "holy crap, my fans are insane, I want to barricade myself in the basement*!" It seems like handmade hats are a pretty personal thing to send a total stranger, you know?
Also I worry that some participants might think it's funny to send him a beanie that's sparkly pink or rainbow or otherwise conveys the message "lol your gay," which could easily (and accurately, IMO) come off as homophobic. And if anyone pulls any crap like that, I don't want to have anything to do with it.
His friend Tyler Shields occasionally lurks on the comm, maybe he could give us input on whether this is a good idea.
ETA: I've proposed the idea in comments that we do something for an animal charity - like toys and blankets for a shelter - at the same time. I would be much more comfortable with that.
*OK, most houses in California don't actually have basements but you get the idea.
