I saw The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
I like Wes Anderson so I’d been meaning to see this one. I didn’t like it as much as Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums. It’s like with those two films, it was more toned-down but The Life Aquatic was Wes Anderson^2. It was too much. It was trying too hard. I liked the visuals. It took sum effort to maintain the suspension of disbelief but it could be done. And I like the continuing theme of young men searching for fathers and older men searching for... I guess the validation that comes from being mentors. Rushmore is still my favorite and I think it’s not a coincidence that that one was the most down-to-earth. At the part in The Life Aquatic where he started shooting the pirates (I’m not joking, that was in the movie), it just fell apart for me.
Anjelica Huston should be in more movies. She’s terrific. It’s a crime that she wasn’t cast as Mme. Maxime.
