You know what the problem is with the type of attitude evidenced in the aforementioned joke e-mail?

Office parties aren't merely social events: employees who don't go will be at a disadvantage professionally. I know. I've been to office parties (thankfully, they were all good ones where I work). People talk about work, no matter how much the boss jokingly scolds "no shop talk." People network.

Pretending to condone something you don't agree with should not be a job requirement!

I'm not saying vegetarians should insist on not having meat served to anyone or gay men should insist on having a flower arrangement (eyeroll). I'm talking about things like Ramadan - employees who aren't eating at a party (why the fuck wouldn't they hold the party well after 5:00 anyway?) are going to be regarded with rude curiosity at best and probably suspicion. I get treated rudely enough when people realize I'm eating vegetarian food and at least that isn't as obvious as eating nothing at all.

The thing that offends me so much about this is that this is exactly the sort of mentality that leads people to call for boycotts of stores whose employees say "Happy Holidays," not to mention scream bloody murder when someone dares suggest that forcing school children to refer to our home as "one nation, under God" violates the establishment clause. It's not PC liberalism run amok. It's fucking freedom of religion. That means we're free not to pretend we're all Christians. What do these people have against the Constitution?
