SUPPORT WOMEN'S RIGHTS
Jun. 28th, 2006 11:27 amI got an e-mail from Planned Parenthood. Please donate by Friday! Go here to donate to Planned Parenthood.
Stop the federal abortion ban and support Planned Parenthood's programs!
Dear Gillian,
We're about to take the battle against abortion bans to the U.S. Supreme Court. The court has announced that it will hear Gonzales v. Planned Parenthood, a case challenging the 2003 federal abortion ban.
The stakes in this case are extremely high. The government is arguing that politicians, not doctors and their patients, should have the final say in private medical decisions.
This Friday the 30th at midnight, our fiscal year ends. Our ability to win this case depends in part on what YOU can donate in the next three days. Our budget for future programs and services, including the Supreme Court challenge, will reflect your generosity during the brief remainder of this fiscal year.
Appealing a case in the Supreme Court is expensive. From paying our lawyers, to travel expenses, to producing briefs, it will cost us about $150,000. Help us raise $50,000 before Friday's midnight fiscal deadline!
The federal abortion ban, passed by Congress and signed by President Bush in 2003, would outlaw abortions as early as 12 to 15 weeks in pregnancy that doctors say are safe and the best to protect women's health.
Planned Parenthood has already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting this ban in lower courts. Every court thus far has struck down the ban because, among other things, it does not protect women's health. But with new Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and John Roberts now on the bench, we face a serious challenge.

And of course, as the court hears this case, politicians across the country are creating a gauntlet of laws and regulations to chip away at Roe v. Wade.
We're squeezing the last drop out of every dollar to stop those laws. In the past four months, we have mobilized thousands of volunteers for South Dakota. We have helped beat back a ban in Mississippi and brought national attention to another in Ohio. We succeeded in passing the Freedom of Choice Act in Hawaii, a model for the nation.
Planned Parenthood has the experience, the strategies, and an ambitious plan to grow our programs and protect choice across the country. Can we do it? Definitely. But only with your help.
Sincerely,
Cecile Richards
