I need to make a Sandman icon. That'll rule.
In the meantime, I have a question: how did Morpheus escape from the glass thingie? How did the close proximity of someone dreaming allow him to get out? He was trapped inside the circle in the physical realm; how was he able to leave the circle to get into the guard's dream? I get that once he got himself some dreamstuff (the sand), he could use it to escape but how was he able to get it in the first place? Dreams aren't part of the physical realm - if he could get at a nearby dreamer's dreams from inside the circle then how come he couldn't get at anybody's from anywhere?
That's the one thing I haven't figured out. That and why he couldn't just say "look, Orpheus, I know it sucks that you can't die by yourself but if I kill you then the Kindly Ones'll come after me. And to be honest, I don't care that much about finding Destruction anyway. So, y'know, it's been great seeing you and everything but I've gotta go find a new girlfriend who'll get fed up with me and then I can be all depressed again. Later!"
I suppose it's possible he'd already figured out what was going to happen and was just doing what he knew he was destined to do anyway. And he did say that he expected everything would be fine even with the Kindly Ones as long as he stayed in The Dreaming.
I guess that was the last test: the whole thing about him having to choose between change and death - he was so rooted in his moral/ethical system which required him to go to Nuala immediately and stick around when she asked that he had to do it even though he knew it would mean he'd have to die. Not going would have required that he change more than he was able to.
I actually cried during his funeral. I NEVER cry at movies or books. With a few notable exceptions.
