been thinking about this

I was re-reading the bits about Dumbledore's past (looking for his parents' names, because I needed to make a Sim Dumbledore to keep myself occupied while LJ was down). The thing with Ariana, where we're supposed to go "ohh, it's OK, they didn't lock her up because she was a Squib, they just locked her up because she had severe PTSD. That's alright then," that whole thing? Am I the only one who has a problem with that? Albus isn't really at fault because he was a child himself but there was no mention of the parents seeking medical or psychiatric help for her. Her dad just flies into a paternalistic rage and gets himself locked up and then her mum keeps her confined to the house because she's dangerous. Isn't it possible St. Mungo's would have been able to do something for her? It's like her being an assault survivor is every bit as shaming for her family as her being a Squib would have been.
It's like how we're supposed to sympathize with Mr. Rochester, with his crazy, locked-up wife who ends up burning the house down and conveniently killing herself. That's a little disturbing. Maybe in the setting of Jane Eyre, there weren't really any alternatives for him but we've seen there were for the Dumbledores.
What do you all think?
