Aw, man, I had to use online tech support just now and I looked like a n00b. I have an e-mail account that comes with my DSL; I don't use it to receive anything but I have to be logged in, in order to use AT&T's server to send all my outgoing mail. I couldn't log in today; I suspected something stupid happened like they changed the passwords for the new year and sent out an e-mail notifying me that the password had changed, to the account I could no longer log in to. I certainly didn't change it myself. I tried to do the usual "forgot your password" thing on their web site but it didn't seem to be available for people on the domain I have (AT&T has a bunch of them like att.net, sbc.net, etc.)
So I did the live chat. And looked like a dumb-ass. First she asked whether it was my primary account and I had to ask what she meant by that. Then I had to enter the modem password, which is different from the e-mail password and I had no idea what it was. I clicked "forgot your password?" for the modem and it gave me the password hint I'd created, which would've been fine except the hint was that I wrote it down in the manual that came with the modem. And after about a minute of digging through the piles of paper on and around my desk, I couldn't find it. So I had to reset the modem password too.
It all works now. I just felt silly having to admit that my password hint was totally useless. At the time, I'd assumed I'd keep the manual in the box with all my other manuals, but it's not there now. I expect I'll find it when I move.
