I was browsing around various feminism-oriented lj communities. I'm surprised that I seem to be above the average age on most of them. Almost everyone who states their age (and a lot of people do in their introductory posts) is aged 14-17. Anyway. That's not really what this post is about. I saw one entry in a community, just referring to the fact that the poster had forgotten to include a link or something in another post she made. And she said "woah, blonde moment." I HATE it when people say that. People have said it right in front of me and not understood when I looked shocked. What I really don't get is why on earth anyone who identifies themself as a feminist would say that or make similar cracks about dumb blonds. It's no better when people say "well, I mean people who dye their hair blond." So you don't hold it against me that I was born with blond hair? How charitable. But why have a negative stereotype about people who dye their hair blond but not about any other color? Tons of progressive people dye their hair different colors, not to conform to some external standard but because they feel like it, because it's fun or their version of self-expression or whatever. Why hold it against people for choosing one color over another? Saying "blond moment" may be intended to be self-deprecating but what they're really saying is that they momentarily acted as stupid as we blond women do all the time.

...I know 'themself' isn't a word. But if enough people use it, it'll become one. I still don't know what to do about conjugating the verbs, though. It sounds awkward to apply singular verbs to 'they' and 'them.'
