[Error: unknown template qotd]It often amounts to the same thing - the candidate I want to vote for is also the Democratic candidate. Well, sometimes I vote for the Green if there's no danger of splitting the left-wing vote and letting the Republican win.

I also carved the pumpkin for the Burds, Turds & Mammals lab in the pumpkin-carving contest! Here's mine:

The kids ignored the lack of decorations and Trick-or-Treated anyway! And I ran out of mini-Three Musketeers in about 10 minutes! Crap! I put up a sign that says "Sorry, I have run out of candy. Happy Halloween!" Argh, if I'd checked my e-mail sooner, I'd have known I wasn't going out tonight and I could've bought more candy. I've turned off the lights now so it's more obvious that there's no candy here. But I like handing out candy to the kiddies!

Ah well, it seems like all the neighborhood kids came in one big wave and there might not have been many more anyway.

Halloween!

I was going to go the my friend's house to watch Three Amigos but I just read my e-mail and they decided to do it a different night. So now I am home after all and I do have some candy - not that I routinely buy myself bags of mini 3 Musketeers bars or anything >_> - but I have no decorations to signal that candy is available.

Plus my hair looks weird. But it is kind of Halloween-y. See, I dyed it black for my Elphaba costume for last night's lab party, which was super fun. It's temporary dye but it's supposed to take a month to wash out and I didn't want to wait that long so I used dye remover. Bleach, basically, but in a box that says "dye remover."

Aaaaaand it didn't work the same all over my hair. So now it's mostly orange but with black patches. It occurred to me that I look like a reverse version of my tortoiseshell cat, who is mostly black with orange patches. I got some light golden brown dye that's slightly darker than my real hair, dark enough to cover the remaining faded black. But my hair is pretty dry right now from the dye remover so I'm going to wait until tomorrow to do the new dye, to give it a chance to build up some natural oil. Anyway, the point is I don't think I'll bother getting decorations and handing out candy.

Costume pics!

I usually like South Park but sometimes there's an episode that's just one, 28-minute testament to how Matt & Trey Do Not Get It. For example: the one about the BP spill. They have a character called Hindsight Man, whose superpower is that he has really good hindsight. And sort of a silly, nasal voice, just in case the audience didn't get that this character was supposed to be ridiculous. And he goes around saying what should have been done instead of actually helping. The implication is that when someone says, for example, that the government shouldn't have turned a blind eye to BP and other oil companies' lack of compliance with safety rules, that person is stupid and they should be doing something concrete to help. Like making an episode of a cartoon, for example. What South Park, infuriatingly, fails to understand is this isn't just about saying what should have been done, it's about making sure we don't make the same mistakes again.

But you can't expect a couple of libertarian douchebags - talented, entertaining douchebags but douchebags nonetheless - to come out on the side of environmentalists against a giant corporation. Or to refrain from using over-the-top, exaggerated strawman arguments.

I'm still going to watch the rest of the episode, though. I have to find out who Mysterion is.

ETA: Oh. It's Clyde.

for those of you who haven't put together a costume yet, I think you should watch this:

For those of you not on the Trek fan communities, the NASA web site has a song contest where you can pick your favorite space song and the Star Trek theme is one of the choices. Another choice is a song by Big Head Todd, which I've never heard of but apparently it has a small but dedicated following. So dedicated that they're obviously cheating to get that song to be number 1. And some Star Trek fans are pretty upset about that.

OK, whatever, it would be cool if the one we like wins. But the top two songs will both be used and it's obviously going to be these two. And I'm getting a little sick of seeing a new overwrought post complaining about it EVERY DAY and urging us to vote more. See, there's no IP tracking or anything, you can just sit there reloading the page and vote as many times as you like. The lack of security is an indication of how seriously NASA is taking this. Which is ENTIRELY APPROPRIATE for a contest where people pick which song they like, actually!

It's painfully ironic that there's a real election coming up next week and people are complaining bitterly about fraud and voter apathy in a SONG CONTEST. OK, some of the users are too young to vote in the real election but I bet most of them aren't. And I know that getting all worked up about this thing doesn't mean people don't also care deeply about the real election. It's just bugging me that they don't seem to have any perspective. The post I linked to above urges people to protest to NASA about the Big Head Todd fans' VOTER FRAUD. NASA doesn't care. If they did, they would have made it harder to cheat. They can do that, they are NASA after all.

I was going to post a bitchy comment about it but I'm just going to leave it here. People tend to get offended when you point out that the thing they're losing sleep over is actually trivial and kind of stupid.

Seriously, I'm not going to spend the day in front of the computer again tomorrow because I have to go to the lab for a thesis defense. BUT I did say I was going to post a picture of my house and I can't let you all down, now can I?

I planted some cacti too. And I've devised a system for placing torches to help me find my way back to my base underground. I still get lost though. There have been three times now where I just had to dig my way out and came up under the ocean. I have to plug the hole with a brick so it doesn't start flooding the mine. It won't fill the whole mine like in real life but it'll make a waterfall and make things confusing.

Also I have now mined enough iron ore that I could start making MINE CARTS. I made a video but when I try to upload it to YouTube, it just says it's configuring the video and it never finishes. I'll try again tomorrow.

And then I will go to the lab!

I actually did leave the house today; I was going to meet my classmate from Spanish to practice (and sort of tutor him because let's be honest, I'm the best student in the class apart from the one girl who speaks Spanish as a first language). But he didn't show up! I only waited about 20 minutes - we were going to meet at a cafe so I got a sandwich and tea and sat outside in the little plaza and there was a crazy guy ranting to himself the whole time. So I didn't feel like hanging around for too long.

ETA: OK, the video uploaded! Here it is:
gmonkey42: cartoon Sephiroth (Default)
OK, I'm going to get back to real life tomorrow. But first, here's one more Minecraft post. With pictures!

...I realized I haven't taken a screencap of the outside of the house. OK, there will be another post with that.

The bedroom, with fancy brick fireplace:

The stairs behind the wooden rail lead down to...

...the basement, where I do my smelting:

And here's the garden at night:

In the far corner, there's a small wheat field. You can see the box where I keep my seeds and gardening tools. In the middle there's the gate in the wall that keeps the exploding creepers out and the road that leads down the beach to the dock - you can see its small tower with a light (I made another boat). And on the far right, papyrus reeds. They're for making paper, which you can then make into books and those are used to make bookshelves. The bookshelves do nothing. They just look nice in the house.

Next time: house exterior and mine pics!

I actually quit playing voluntarily this time. As opposed to quitting when it's midnight and I have to get some sleep because I have class in the morning. I fell in lava twice in a row. And when you fall in lava, all your inventory gets burned up and it's gone forever. I had just mined a bunch of ore and diamonds and about 80 units of red dust! And they're all gone!

The second time, I thought I was doomed after I dug through to an underground waterfall and got swept way down into unexplored caverns. But I dug my way out of that! I even had to kill some zombies and the only weapon I had was a stone sword! I had to use up my good pickaxe getting out, which meant I couldn't dig any ore on the way. So I went back to my house, made another pickaxe and went back in... and fell in lava again. At least I didn't lose as much stuff the second time but I did lose a fair amount of red dust. It only appears near lava, see, so mining it is dangerous. Especially when you're kind of bad at steering with the mouse.

On the plus side, I started a new map (I started it earlier today, I mean; the falling-in-lava occurred in this new map) and this one has islands. I built a sweet house and a dock and I'm working on a wall to keep away the creepers - creepers are vine monsters that explode. They suck. I had to repair my old house twice because creepers exploded parts of it. This one has a stone wall that they can't get over. I also had a boat but I crashed it. It's a known bug that the boat steering is a little wonky. That wasn't really the reason, I just didn't realize it would break if I drove it into a wall. I didn't think I was going that fast! I am better at driving boats in real life. Also at not falling in lava. I have never fallen into lava in real life.

This is me right now:

Comixed of- panel 1- guy saying 'I'll just play Minecraft for a few minutes,' panel 2- the Enterprise built in Minecraft, panel 3- guy is a skeleton

I didn't make the Enterprise but do I kind of look like the last panel after staying up past midnight playing Minecraft. My back is bad again so I couldn't go help with the seal captures. So I played Minecraft instead. ALL DAY.

I have a bow & arrows! And I found red dust and two diamonds! And I went wandering around and built a cottage on the beach but then I died and respawned back at the starting point and now I can't find the cottage! Apart from that, it's good.

OK, off to Spanish class. It's good that I have class today or else I'd probably spend all day playing Minecraft again.

1. Supplementary report for the IACUC committee - DONE

2. Give my grant application to Dr. H to get his feedback before I submit it - DONE

Still to do: stats methods section for my thesis proposal.

I didn't go on the boat today, the other student changed her protocol and didn't need help. But I'm still going Friday to catch & tag seals.

I would like to go to bed but I cannot because my cat is sitting on my leg and scrunging her claws on my knee and purring.

Here's a phrase I don't like: "[blank] is just that: [blank]." It's a tautology and it usually comes off as condescending and insulting to the reader. I wish people would stop using it.
gmonkey42: cartoon Sephiroth (Default)
First you trick me into liking a Jason Mraz song and now you've got me not only liking Death Cab For Cutie but actually wanting to get an album or two from them on iTunes.

...somehow I am totally unabashed about liking Shakira and Gaga but Death Cab for Cutie is kind of embarrassing.

On the plus side, Zachary Quinto apparently thought they were cool two years ago. So I've got that going for me.

Some of the otters have radio tags and that antenna thing is to track them.

We (the lab) had a weekend camping retreat at Big Creek. It was awesome. I'm tired. I brought my air mattress so I slept pretty well this time (unlike last time, when I forgot to bring anything to sleep on and it was just the tarp bottom of my tent and my sleeping bag between me and the hard, hard ground). We hiked to a waterfall, that was really pretty. And we did a little rock climbing there to get to the upper pool. It was one big waterfall, a pool, then another waterfall into a smaller pool then down into the creek. It was 2 miles each way, which doesn't sound far except we had to start on top of the ridge and go all the way down into the valley; it was pretty steep and there were a lot of switchbacks. So I'm pretty tired.

...I'm going to have a rest now.
gmonkey42: a lol!seal saying "O HAI!" (lolseal)
Finally. That only took me about a year longer than it should have. I wanted to get it to Dr. H. soon because he's doing some traveling later this month and he says it's a good time to give him things we need him to read so he can do it on the plane.

I'd been tinkering with it for a loooooong time. Finally my mum said I had to stop tinkering and just turn it in Monday and she'd call me Monday night to make sure I'd done it. Haha. It worked! I spent about 90 minutes finishing it up Monday then handed it in.

Next steps:
- build the biopsy punch v2.0.
- find a dead seal to test it on. Or if I can't, then a dead sea lion will do.
- make a report to the IACUC committee on the biopsy punch.

AND there's a grant I want to apply for, I need to get started on that today. Several people in my lab are also applying for it for their seal projects, unfortunately. And their theses are more conservation-related than mine (this organization doing the grant has kind of a conservation angle). BUT the good news is there isn't just one winner, they have a whole pot of money and you can start applying on Oct. 15 and they just keep giving out the grants to qualifying projects until the money runs out. I need to get my application in on or shortly after the 15th. Because I know my lab-mates are on the ball and will get theirs in soon.
