gmonkey42: lol!Sylar says "CAKE?" (sylarlikescake)
Here's another page from Sylar's scrapbook. I mean, how can you take a road trip and not make a page about it for your scrapbook?

Read this Pandagon post about environmentalism: it's not about hugging trees, it's about having a place where humans can live.

That's why this George Carlin video pisses me the hell off:

"Human arrogance" isn't what it's about. We ALREADY interfered with nature and now we're trying to stop doing it more. Speaking of arrogance, how can they think they're so much smarter than scientists, that they know about mass extinctions of the past and we don't?

Carlin: "You know what [environmentalists] are interested in? A clean place to live - their own habitat." What the fuck is wrong with wanting a clean place to live? How is that not a worthy goal? Like that's supposed to invalidate our argument, like it would be better if we wanted to preserve the environment for abstract reasons? Fuck George Carlin.

A particularly trenchant and hilarious post by Sady of Tiger Beatdown:

'Hence, the Menaissance: From "Men," meaning dudes, and "aissance," meaning "making asses out of themselves."'

Maybe this explains why I don't particularly care for Mad Men.

Except I actually do like the taste of scotch, if it's nice and smooth. Once again, pop culture determines that I am a man. Crap.

And happy Glorious 25th of May.

I am disappointed that Google doesn't have a modified logo for Towel Day.

Something smells in here. I keep getting a whiff of it but my nose is pretty stuffed up with allergies so I can't tell where it's coming from.

It's not me. I checked.

I should probably take out the garbage.

[Error: unknown template qotd]YOUNG INDIANA JONES. I loved that show. I have some episodes on tape and it's still good. Unlike Brisco County Jr. The over-the-top cheesiness is not as appealing to me now as it was when I was 13. But Bruce Campbell is still awesome.

[Error: unknown template qotd]SCIENCE.

I'd have them actually teach it properly, teach what the scientific method is actually about so people don't finish high school believing that it's all memorizing things out of textbooks.

[Error: unknown template qotd]HAAAhaha! Yes. There was a Shakesville post about this recently. I'm omitting words that are commonly misused/misspelled because 1. that's not really what the question was about and 2. we'd be here all day.

Actually I can only think of these two off the top of my head:

1) "it is what it is" - hate it because it's a meaningless tautology

2) "go ahead and" - it's redundant and it makes the speaker sound like they think the listener needs their permission

I also hate how management-types use hyperbolic metaphors waaaaay too much. "putting out fires" "fall on [one's] sword" etc. Like they have to make everything sound dramatic and important.

I have to confess that I have occasionally used both "in the loop" and "on the same page" although they make me cringe a little. It's hard when you're communicating with people who talk like that to avoid picking up their phrases.

Yet again, homophobic bullshit directed at Zachary Quinto from his so-called fans on [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek

It doesn't help that the majority of commenters there are children. I'm not exaggerating, they're under 18. So a lot of them genuinely don't know any better, and grew up in the age of Will and Grace where it's OK for gay people to exist as long as we're non-threatening and sexless and the butt of jokes.

I responded to some of the comments - a lot of them are defending it on the grounds of "we didn't mean it that way! It's just a joke!" No. This Shakesville post explains why not (well, the post is about sexism but the same argument applies to homophobia):

There's a very common misperception that sexism is subjective—that any given incident identified by one person as sexist could be identified by another as not sexist, and either both of them are right, because the whole thing is just a matter of opinion anyway, or the latter is right, because if it's not equally obvious to everyone, it can't be sexist. It's this conventional wisdom about the subjectivity of sexism that underlies the ubiquitous "I don't see it" rejoinder, particularly recurrent in discussions of expressed sexism against women, on which this post will be focused.

If a LGBT person says something is homophobic and a straight person says "it's just a harmless joke, get over it" who's right? Hint: not the one who belongs to the privileged group that systematically oppresses the other group!

I disagree

Someone linked to this post:Storming the Battlements or: Why the Culture of Mary Sue Shaming is Bully Culture.

It's the standard defense of Mary Sues, claiming that making fun of Mary Sue fics is misogynist and conveniently ignoring the fact that it's not about OFCs per se, it's about shitty writing. The post starts (after some insultingly obvious stuff about how Words Mean Things) with descriptions of alleged Mary Sues that turn out to be **gasp!** written by professionals! (Incidentally, why not include an example of a character from a published work that people have actually called a Mary Sue? Like Bella Swan or Ayla?) The only one I'm familiar with is Number One from Star Trek. Who appeared in exactly one episode (or two if you count The Menagerie as two episodes). A character can't be a Mary Sue if she wasn't around long enough for us to know anything about her beyond a few basic facts. Also, Author of the post? I guess I have been living under a fucking rock then, because no, I was not aware that she's been your favorite thing about Star Trek ever since you saw the movie with the hot, young actors and discovered that Star Trek existed six months ago. This lack of awareness that there are readers beyond your circle of friends might begin to explain the problem.

So yeah, I'm going to keep reading and enjoying Mary Sue-bashing posts. And when people criticize me for it? I'm not going to get all whiny and threaten to quit the internet.

[Error: unknown template qotd]I pretty much already know what her meows mean. They mean: "letmeoutletmeoutletmeout! Open the dooooooor, I want to go oooooooout! Sweet, door's open! Ooh, it's cold. Make it not cold! Hey, don't close the door, I might want to go out later!"

So here's this idea on [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek: we all knit beanies and send ZQ a big ol' box of beanies for his birthday.

I can knit beanies!

However:
Do I want to participate in this? I'm concerned that it might be about a 50/50 chance whether his reaction is "aww, my fans are hilarious," or "holy crap, my fans are insane, I want to barricade myself in the basement*!" It seems like handmade hats are a pretty personal thing to send a total stranger, you know?

Also I worry that some participants might think it's funny to send him a beanie that's sparkly pink or rainbow or otherwise conveys the message "lol your gay," which could easily (and accurately, IMO) come off as homophobic. And if anyone pulls any crap like that, I don't want to have anything to do with it.

His friend Tyler Shields occasionally lurks on the comm, maybe he could give us input on whether this is a good idea.

ETA: I've proposed the idea in comments that we do something for an animal charity - like toys and blankets for a shelter - at the same time. I would be much more comfortable with that.

*OK, most houses in California don't actually have basements but you get the idea.

Food post! I whipped up some delicious meals and that means it's time for a food post.

Tasty Angel Hair Pasta
a handful of angel hair pasta
1/4ish cup olive oil
a handful of baby spinach
1 roma tomato, diced
2 garlic cloves, crushed
fresh herbs from your window garden
salt & pepper to taste

Cook the pasta in boiling salted water. Heat the olive oil on med-low in a frying pan (or a sauté pan if you're fancy-schmancy enough to own one). Sauté the garlic & spinach for a couple minutes then throw in the tomatoes and herbs. The pasta should be done by now; drain & rinse it then toss it in the pan with the vegetables.
Optional: grate some Parmesan on top.
Serve with a glass of Merlot when you're in a crappy mood. Follow with a couple of chocolate truffles.

And then for breakfast today:
Scrambled eggs and asparagus
2 eggs, beaten
1tsp butter
4 sticks of asparagus
1 Tbsp olive oil for the asparagus
1/4 cup olive oil (for the spinach etc.)
a handful of baby spinach
1/2 roma tomato, diced
1 clove garlic
fresh dill from aforementioned window herb garden
Hollandaise (I just used a packet mix, with a little extra lemon juice)
a little sprinkle of salt on the tomatoes

Blanche the asparagus then cook it in a frying pan on med-high heat with a little splash of oil to brown the outside just a little (grilling would also be appropriate but who wants to fire up the grill to make breakfast?). Plate the asparagus topped with warm Hollandaise and set aside; sauté the vegetables in that pan with more oil, and in a separate pan cook the eggs (with the butter). Put the eggs on the plate next to the asparagus and dump the sautéd vegetables on top of the eggs. Eat. Decide to make own Hollandaise next time. Post recipe in LiveJournal. Have weird-smelling pee.

[Error: unknown template qotd]Yes. We need to hurry up and invent a warp drive so the Vulcans will come visit us and take me away from this crappy planet and back to Vulcan, where people actually value intelligence.

But seriously? Probably not. Life on other planets, probably, yeah, but making the jump from single-celled life to complex, multicellular life is pretty astronomically improbable.
