I'm staying with LJ but some people on whose journals I'd like to be able to comment have migrated over to DW. So does anyone have an invite code? It looks like I can't just sign up for free.

ETA: That was quick! Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] jettcat!

I went to lunch with some friends from the lab today (instead of going to Seminar...) and I had this great burrito. It was a chili relleno burrito: basically a chili relleno inside a bean & rice burrito. Awesome.

Every Wednesday, people meet up in the Physical Oceanography lab down the hall to play folk/bluegrass and I finally brought my guitar and went. It's super fun! I had assumed it was for more advanced musicians but there are other people at about my level so that's cool. I can't read tablature quick enough to be able to play along on a song I don't already know but I did fine playing the chords and strumming along. I made a photocopy of Keep On The Sunny Side so I can practice more at home.

This is way better than going to CSUMB for meditation class.

I'm kind of late to the party with this but I finally read Refractions by [livejournal.com profile] bigmamag and it's good. K/S, in two alternative universes besides AOS, and they all meet up with each other thanks to a wonky space phenomenon. I liked it. A handful of misused words but the story is compelling enough that that didn't bother me too much. It came to my attention because the author posted a new sort of prequel one-off that takes place in the badass universe. That one is good too.

It's another [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek Party Post!

Lookit the crappy Photoshop I made for the party:

Seriously, I think this would make an awesome crackfic: mirror universe where instead of the evil Terran Empire, they're just a bunch of spray-tanned, Ed Hardy-wearing douchebags. Which is probably worse.

I had a lie-in and read for about three hours, then I went to Shou Shu and had my private lesson after class - if you sign up for six months of classes, you also get a half-hour private lesson once a week. Nice! Now I just have three more combos and the kata to learn for my low yellow belt test.

Aaaaand this afternoon I'm going to go down to the shopping center and get a slice of pizza, use my coupon for free underpants from Victoria's Secret, go to the fabric store for material for this skirt pattern I just got and then go to the salon and get my eyebrows did. With hot wax. I keep telling my mum it's not as painful as it sounds but she doesn't believe me. Anyway. It's a lovely, sunny day, my flu is almost completely gone and I'm having an endorphin high after Shou Shu so I'm in a really good mood :D

I've been reading this article from a link posted by [livejournal.com profile] springheel_jack in bits and pieces while I eat my lovely orange slices and wait for my queries to run.

It's about the racism and colonialism in Avatar, but with some new insights into this type of film that I hadn't seen before.

I especially liked the bit about Titanic. I had sort of an Ah-ha moment reading it: that's why Titanic is so enormously popular with girls (and women)! Jack is a male Manic Pixie Dream Girl! All the more reason not to shoehorn Kirk and Spock into those roles

1. My original plan was to come to the lab for a few hours before Seminar to work on my thesis stuff (priority 1: IACUC application!) but there's a thesis defense this afternoon, so instead I arrived shortly before Seminar then worked on my IACUC application and now I'm about to go to the thesis defense for free food - I mean to support my fellow student - no, mainly it's the free food. I helped this student with her subtidal work!

2. I thought there would be more bullet points but the defense starts at 4:00 so I need to go down to the seminar room in a minute. Uhhhh. I really thought there was something else to post. I'm hungry. My flu is getting better. I'm still a little congested but it's like 80% better now.

3. Oh! I remember what the other thing was: I'm listening to Pandora Radio and a song came on and I thought "wow, I like this! Who is this?" And it was Jason Mraz. I think I have to punch myself in the face.

[Error: unknown template qotd]I was going to say "Entirely too focused on academic achievement," but that's not actually a sentence.

Hmm.

Is it cheating if I count a contraction as one word? Haha, how about "I can be a little pedantic?"

This is fun!

"Nerdy scientist seeks similar for sexyfuntimes!"

It counts as one word if I just run them together, right? That's totally a word.

I think I'll conclude with:

"I'm a pirate; that explains everything."

ETA: Bonus! Click the link above "View X Answers" to see a staggering number of people fail to grasp (or just ignore) the concept of "six word sentence!"

The party was so fun. 2010 Student Body is officially awesome. I got lots of compliments on my gumbo. It was totally worth standing at the stove for 45 minutes stirring the roux. I did dark roux this time and it really did taste better. Well, dark-ish. I was running out of time and didn't want to turn the temperature any higher because I was afraid I'd burn it. It was somewhere between peanut butter and milk chocolate color; that's almost dark enough for authentic gumbo. I should have made more gumbo, there were more people than I expected. I put out little insulated cups to try to ration it but it was thick enough that people just ladled it onto their plates. It's supposed to be soup! That's what those cups are for! Ah well, as long as they liked it :D

[Error: unknown template qotd]Pfff. Intelligence isn't valued at all in our society, of course being a famous actor would "facilitate a more fulfilling... social life," and a much, much more lucrative career.

And that pisses me off.

[Error: unknown template qotd]Hawaii! Definitely Maui and probably also the Big Island, since I haven't been there before. I'd get a private plane to fly me around; no spending half the day driving to and from Hana! Luxury hotels. Plenty of diving. Spa treatments. Top restaurants. Sailing. And I'd bring all my friends. Because, hey, unlimited money!
gmonkey42: cartoon Sephiroth (Default)
Student Body is going to throw a Mardi Gras theme party and I volunteered to do the food, because as you may have heard if you've been reading this journal, I love food. Someone else is taking care of the king cake and I'm doing gumbo, red beans & rice and Cajun chicken. I did a test-run of the gumbo today and it's good.

I was eating dinner and idly watching men's figure skating and the commentator came out with this gem. It's pretty awesome. Are you ready for it? He said:

"Their greatest strength, for the men in this competition, is a lack of weakness."

I almost snorted Boca burger out my nose.
