Here's an article in Time that sums up how the decriminalization of drugs (ALL of them, not even just pot) has reduced rates of drug abuse and increased rates of addicts getting treatment.
http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1893946,00.html
Instead of throwing people in jail for taking drugs, they offer drug counseling (which is cheaper for the government than incarcerating that person). And even that is optional but a lot of people are taking the opportunity to get help and get off drugs. It's awesome.

I heard about it on this YouTube video:

Pharyngula had a post with another video of hers, about Everybody Draw Muhammad Day; I liked it so I started watching her other videos including the one above.

Meanwhile, Prop 19 was rejected by the majority of voters here in California this year. Because we Americans have a major boner for punishing people. I liked the point made in the video that we should be more concerned with what actually works in the real world than with what satisfies our urge to see the sinners punished. That's such a problem. It's rooted in religion and capitalism and is being pushed by the right wing more strongly than ever.

This applies to a lot of social programs. Like the program in Nevada (can't find a link, sorry. I saw it on a news show) where they found that it was actually cheaper to pay rent on small, cheap apartments for homeless people than it was to allow them to stay homeless and keep having to use emergency medical services. Everybody wins: the homeless people have better health, greater stability and a better chance at getting a job, and the government saves money. But the public doesn't like that type of thing. First, I expect a lot of people would grumble about the expense and ignore the fact that it actually costs less. Some would be blatant enough assholes to say the ideal solution is to stop paying for their emergency medical care too, and just let them die on the street, which is a horrific denial of our responsibility as a society. Since that's not a realistic option, people end up choosing to keep things the way they are, with greater expense and greater suffering, because making things better wouldn't satisfy their vindictive need to feel like they're better than other people.

Another argument against programs like this is "why should they get free counseling/apartments/food stamps/etc.? I work hard, why doesn't the government give me free stuff? It's not fair." But it's completely fair: if the complaining person were to become homeless/addicted to drugs/poor/etc. then the help would be freely given to them too. The government isn't going to say "nope, you work too hard, these programs are only available for lazy people who contribute nothing to society." That's absurd. But it's how a lot of people think it really is.

It's so frustrating to see these solutions that really work but have them rejected here because people would rather have everyone, including themselves, be worse off in exchange for feeling morally superior.

Argh, I went and took a nap earlier and now I'm not sleepy. And I want some juice!

...apparently I am 4.

That's not too unusual, it happens like every other day in Star Trek fanon.

cookies!

This is super funny: my mum asked me a few weeks ago what I wanted for Christmas and I couldn't think of anything so I said:
me: A pony. A pink pony!
mum: A pink pony?
me: A pink pony named Bubbles!
mum: What if I find a pink pony that's not called Bubbles?
me: Then you have to keep looking of course!

So when I came over for Christmas yesterday, she had her usual plate of iced sugar cookies on the counter:

She made me a Bubbles! Four of them, actually! :D My mum is awesome.

[Error: unknown template qotd]I think I used to a little. The secret is to not make it such a big deal in the first place. I don't like how adults encourage kids to get worked up into a frenzy because of course it can't live up to that.

My mum used to put so much pressure on herself to give us a perfect Christmas. I ended up really hating Christmas for several years because it did that to my mum. Now we're both just laid back about it and it's great. We get together with me, my parents and my brother, exchange some presents and have a nice Christmas lunch. And we make cookies because it's fun. Well, we usually make the cookies the day before. My mum does her iced sugar cookies and I do a few different types. This year it was the cherry nut slices, jam creme cookies (I'll put up the recipes for those two later, they're nice), and gingerbread men.

AND my mum got a cakewrecks-worthy Christmas log! There's a plastic axe on the top. And plastic deer and flowers and whatnot. It's glorious.

When I uploaded the pic from my camera for the paella post, I saw this pic I took a few days ago in front of my house and didn't get around to posting:

What are you doing there, tulip? It is winter! I know we're in California but it still gets frosty here at night! You are a silly tulip.

OK, it's really more Spring Vegetable Paella but I made it for my Spanish class end-of-semester potluck and today I felt like making another batch. I won't forget the artichokes this time.

It's basically this Epicurious recipe except ditch the baby carrots, turnips, potatoes, asparagus and garbanzo beans and instead add 1/2 bag of frozen peas & carrots, 1-2 sticks celery, 1 bell pepper, and a can of artichoke hearts. Add the pepper & celery in the initial sauté step and add the artichoke and peas & carrots with the fennel bulb. Also I don't have fresh parsley so I just used about 2 Tbsp dried parsley and it's fine.

Warning: check the roasting fennel after 30 minutes! I don't know what kind of giant chunks they were cutting it into but mine always falls apart anyway (it has layers like an onion). And the small pieces will burn if you leave them in too long.

Also last time I made it, it was a little bland so I added a sprinkle each of white pepper and coriander this time. The broth tastes good! We'll see how it turns out. A little more pepper came out than I wanted but it's fine. I was thinking of bringing some to my parents' place tomorrow but I won't if it turns out spicy; my mum can't stand spicy food. Like even a tiny bit spicy.

Apart from that, I still need to make my sugar nutty crescent cookies if I feel like it. I have nuts left over from the cherry & nut roll-up cookies. Except I also need walnuts, I don't know if I have any of those. Aw, if not then these will just be pecan crescent cookies instead.

I didn't get around to making gingerbread cookies yesterday either. The recipe specifically says not to use blackstrap molasses (dammit, how many s's does it have?! oh, it's an e there not an a) and that's the only kind I have. I didn't know there were other kinds! I think I'll just use it anyway.

ETA: I was thinking, I never put a picture in my food posts because I always eat the food before it occurs to me to take a picture but this time I remembered!

See? It's totally Christmassy. Look at that thing behind it!

Also: yep, it's good but a touch too much white pepper. I'll be more careful sprinkling it from the jar next time.

I decided to make gingerbread cookies today - did my cherry & nut slice cookies the other day and I'm going to do brown sugar nut crescent wrap things too. Gingerbread for today though. Except this just happened:

I had scrambled egg and soy bacon for breakfast - I've started doing 1 whole egg + 1 egg white so it's healthier than my usual two whole eggs. It tastes the same. I threw out the extra yolk. I just looked up a recipe for gingerbread cookies and it calls for one egg yolk. Blast!

There's this thread on Pharyngula: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2010/12/enhance.php#comments about CSI-type shows getting things hilariously wrong about "enhancing" images. PZ posted this video to kick it off:

(check out 0:37! Squeee!)

Someone in comments linked to this comic. Click the thumbnail to, ironically, see it bigger and clearer:

Well, bear in mind I haven't seen Avatar.

TRON: Legacy spoilers )

In conclusion, this movie would have been a lot more enjoyable if I'd been drunk and watching it at home where we could all yell at the screen.

Why does an otherwise lovely party post have to have this body-hate shit?

Someone posted that she doesn't like how people pick on her for having small breasts. That sucks and she deserves our sympathy. But instead of just being supportive, more than half of the replies said something about how large breasts are bad. FAIL.

Facts:
- I can run and jump just fine, actually. It's called a sports bra.
- I have never had any back problems at all. Many people have back problems, and many people have large breasts; I think people are seeing a correlation that's not actually all that strong.
- Yes, it is hard for me to find clothes that fit my proportions because I'm not typical. Apparently I deserve this?
- Breasts don't have particularly a lot of sweat glands, certainly not compared with the hands, feet, groin and armpits. I don't even know where they got this one. OK, there are some concentrated around the nipples but we all have nipples. I can't help thinking there's some fat hate tangled up in here somewhere.
- I don't like to sleep on my stomach because it means keeping my head turned at a 90% angle so I can, y'know, breathe. I can, however, lie on my stomach without any difficulty, and in fact often do lie on my stomach when I'm doing yoga.

SO QUIT SNEERING ABOUT HOW IT'S GREAT NOT HAVING A BODY LIKE MINE, ASSHOLES.

ETA: Also this type of discrimination against women with large breasts and these accusations that we're inappropriate no matter what we wear are quite typical.

1. In the winter above the arctic circle, there is no "next morning," it's dark all the time.

2. Also THERE ARE NO PINE TREES GROWING THERE WTF

I liked the bit with Seth's dad as the narrator, though. That was cute.

[Error: unknown template qotd]This one, but only with the video.

Without the video, it's the worst song.

I don't know why I do this to myself: read comments on Pharyngula. PZ Meyers may be feminist-friendly but the comments section is definitely not a safe space. It would be nice if there were more overlap between the "atheist/skeptic" and "not a douchebag" categories.

What brought this on? This post here, about a Christian version of the Mystery Method. The video is pretty funny. The comments section on the Pharyngula post is not so entertaining. The majority of people seems to get it - especially everyone laying the well-deserved smackdown on OMS! - but the ones who don't are making my blood boil.

Two types that are especially sticking in my craw today:long post is long )

coffee!

Sometimes I can get away with drinking regular coffee but usually I make half-caf or decaf. But I got this awesome Fireside Blend coffee from Cost Plus and it tastes really good! Here's what it says on the bag: "A delicious indulgence. Smooth, buttery with rum and cinnamon overtones."

I couldn't ruin it by doing a mixture of half that and half Folger's decaf! So I had a full-strength coffee and a small pastry for breakfast. Now I'm all jittery. Not that I'm actually shaking but I have that nasty, too-much-coffee feeling. And my typing accuracy is definitely lower than usual. I'll eat some more, that should help.
gmonkey42: cartoon Sephiroth (Default)
[Error: unknown template qotd]Haha, when I read the first sentence I thought "video games!" I heard a good definition of addiction: when you don't want to do it but you do it anyway. Except that could also apply to homework... You know what I mean. The line is where you do the thing that's bad for you not because you enjoy it and are willing to make the tradeoff between "bad for you" and "fun," but rather because you feel a compulsion to do it.

I can't spend more than a few hours gaming without taking a break for eating/peeing/resting. But I have spent an entire weekend mostly playing a video game: Mario RPG, FFVII, the Paper Marios, Civilization, The Sims, Minecraft. Good times.

I would have thought a community about popular science would mostly consist of people who are either actual scientists or interested and reasonably well-informed non-scientists. Nope. It seems like about half the members don't know the first damn thing about science yet insist on arguing with those of us who do.

Case in point: this post about biocentrism, a bogus hypothesis that takes a principle of quantum mechanics, misunderstands it, and tries to use that misinterpretation to prove that human consciousness creates the universe. It's The Secret, basically.

A bunch of us explained why this is bullcrap but some people still think it's worth discussing. Because collective unconscious! Brains generate electromagnetic fields! There's, like, a lot we don't understand about the universe, man!

Congratulations, [livejournal.com profile] ontd_science members who shall remain nameless, You Fail Science Forever!
