gmonkey42: cartoon Sephiroth (Half Blood Prince)
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sylvadin, here's a great essay about why Snape isn't evil (includes HBP spoilers).

Still no sign of decent Lupin fanfic.

success!

Somehow I missed the most recent installment of shoebox_project.

And good Lupin fic will be had by all.

Supposedly humorous series of e-mails about planning an office holiday party.

That's right, it's so annoying that everyone isn't a Christian, white, straight, thin, carnivorous, middle-class alcohol-drinker. I feel so sorry for the Patties of the world who are forced to accommodate the basic human dignity of deviants like me in the workplace. It's so very important to have your little let's-get-drunk-and-commit-sexual-harassment Office Christmas Parties instead of, I don't know, actually GETTING SOME WORK DONE.

"War on Christmas?" Fuckin' sign me up.

You know what the problem is with the type of attitude evidenced in the aforementioned joke e-mail?

Office parties aren't merely social events: employees who don't go will be at a disadvantage professionally. I know. I've been to office parties (thankfully, they were all good ones where I work). People talk about work, no matter how much the boss jokingly scolds "no shop talk." People network.

Pretending to condone something you don't agree with should not be a job requirement!

I'm not saying vegetarians should insist on not having meat served to anyone or gay men should insist on having a flower arrangement (eyeroll). I'm talking about things like Ramadan - employees who aren't eating at a party (why the fuck wouldn't they hold the party well after 5:00 anyway?) are going to be regarded with rude curiosity at best and probably suspicion. I get treated rudely enough when people realize I'm eating vegetarian food and at least that isn't as obvious as eating nothing at all.

The thing that offends me so much about this is that this is exactly the sort of mentality that leads people to call for boycotts of stores whose employees say "Happy Holidays," not to mention scream bloody murder when someone dares suggest that forcing school children to refer to our home as "one nation, under God" violates the establishment clause. It's not PC liberalism run amok. It's fucking freedom of religion. That means we're free not to pretend we're all Christians. What do these people have against the Constitution?

Hahahahaha!

Bravo, ProudTexan, bravo. That is some classic trolling right there.

Since you lot haven't been updating a whole lot today, I've been forced to sit here thinking about that stupid e-mail joke more.

Another thing that gets me is that people who never make any effort to accommodate other people vastly overestimate how difficult it is.

For example, being vegetarian, I make an effort to be aware of other people's dietary needs because I know what it's like when people don't. If I'm making food, I'll bring a gluten-free option and/or dairy-free option if someone there is allergic to gluten or lactose. If I'm bringing something with nuts, I'll bring a small quantity of the same thing but without nuts, unless I know for sure that nobody there is allergic to nuts. It hardly takes any extra effort to show people basic courtesy.

People who claim otherwise are generally just doing it to excuse themselves from making that relatively tiny bit of effort.
